On the 1st of October, 1902 eight miners were killed when the winding cable broke as they were ascending the No.2 upcast pit.

There had been some maintenance work done on the headgear wheels and a timber plank had been left near the wheels. Somehow it got took up with the rope and flipped the rope off the wheel. With the rope instantly dropping down to the wheel axle, the resulting jolt on the rope with the weight of the cage snapped it sending the cage, which was near to the surface, crashing to pit-bottom.
